Chucho Valdés, Cuban pianist.
On the occasion of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Jazz at Lincoln Center announces the return of Chucho Valdés, towering Cuban piano virtuoso and distinguished composer, to Rose Theater at Frederick P. Rose Hall, the home of Jazz at Lincoln Center on October 7-8 at 8:00pm ET.
On these special evenings, in celebration of Chucho’s 81st birthday, the maestro will perform his new composition, The Creation with the Yoruban Orchestra.
As part of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 35th season, devoted to celebrating jazz as a global language, Chucho Valdés presents his new four-movement suite exploring the story of creation through Santería ritual music, West African music, and the blues.
Jazz at Lincoln Center is located at Broadway at 60th Street in New York, New York. Visit jazz.org/chucho to purchase tickets and for more information.
Chucho Valdés: The Creation – a re-imagining of a recent work for big band, Afro-Cuban percussion and vocals – explores the story of creation according to La Regla de Ocha, the Yoruba-descended syncretic religion also known as Santería, incorporating elements of Santería ritual music, West African music, the blues, and what Valdés describes as “an atmosphere in the style of Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew.”
A Jazz at Lincoln Center regular since the 1998 solo recital at the Stanley Kaplan Playhouse that generated his tour de force album Solo: Live In New York, Valdés’ recent JALC performances include a two-piano concert with the late Chick Corea, in 2019, and Ochas, with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and Cuban percussion wizard Pedrito Martinez, in 2014. “This new work represents the accumulation of all my experiences and everything I’ve learned in music,” says the founder of the iconic Cuban-Jazz band Irakere, which introduced Paquito D’Rivera, Arturo Sandoval and Valdés to the world. “This is a moment of full maturity, personally and musically.”
Chucho Valdés will be joined on stage by the Yoruban Orchestra: Hilario Duran (conductor, keyboard), John Beasley (conductor, keyboards), Dafnis Prieto (drums), Jose Gola (basses), Roberto Vizcaino (percussion), Eric Barberia (Santaria chants, bata), Yenisel Valdes (Santaria chants), Yosvani Gonzalez (Santaria chants, bata), Felipe ‘Coki’ Sarria (Santaria chants, bata), Brian Lynch (trumpet, flugelhorn), Michael Rodriguez (trumpet, flugelhorn), Marcus Strickland (alto sax, bass clarinet), and Carlos Averoff Jr. (tenor Sax, flute).
A pre-concert discussion hosted by Seton Hawkins, Jazz at Lincoln Center Director of Education Resources and Public Programming, will take place on both nights prior to each show.
