SOMOS Community Care joined New York City Council Member Shekar Krishnan’s health fair Saturday, September 24th to offer critical healthcare services to the neighborhoods of Elmhurst and Jackson Heights, Queens. SOMOS came prepared with mental health screening capacities, along with heartrate and glucose-level monitoring for fair-goers. The organization’s professionals also ensured there were translation services for the diverse community of residents attending the fair.
SOMOS joined other non-profits, artistic organizations, government agencies, and healthcare providers to offer residents a slate of services aimed at improving health and well-being access. SOMOS Community Care materials were offered providing details on addressing asthma, anxiety, and heart health to ensure residents of of Elmhurst and Jackson Heights are connected with the resources and services for living a healthy life.
“We are so proud and grateful for all the organizations like SOMOS Community Care joining our fair, and offering vital services to the neighborhood,” said New York City Council Member Shekar Krishnan. “After the last two years, it will take the resources, participation, and intentions of all providers and advocates to get the city’s health and well-being back on-track.”
“We are proud to work with members of the New York City Council to provide every resident with fundamental health information,” said Dr. Ramon Tallaj of SOMOS Community Care. “SOMOS exists to help residents of every neighborhood—regardless of background or resources—to receive quality, lifelong care for every member of the family. Healthcare should not begin in the emergency room.”
“Transformative coalition-building in communities of color begins with trust, hope and access,” said Henry R. Munoz, III of SOMOS Community Care. “We will continue to advocate for a more equitable system of distribution in healthcare services, which begins in neighborhoods like Elmhurst and Jackson Heights all across the city.”
