School is more than a month away, but State Senator Jose Peralta will be holding his annual Back to School supplies give-away on Saturday, August 8th on 98th Place, right off 57th Avenue in Corona from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The location is right behind St. Paul the Apostle Church. In the case of rain, the event will take place inside the church facilities.
More than 2,100 backpacks will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis while supplies last. There is a one backpack limit per student who is present at the event.
“It is very important that our kids are prepared to start school and having the right supplies is a crucial part of that preparation,” state Senator Jose Peralta (D-East Elmhurst) said. “I want to make sure local students have the proper necessities to succeed during the upcoming academic year. During these tough economic times, many families may be facing a hard time making their ends meet and it is important that education continues forward even when many are tightening their belts.”
Distributed backpacks will have classroom materials inside. Some will include notebooks, while others will hold calculators, rulers or pencils. “It is my hope that these supplies will allow area children to continue toward reaching their full potential through education,” added Senator Peralta.
Besides receiving school supplies, kids at the event will be able to have a day of fun with face painting, a rock climbing wall and other games.
This year’s Back to School supplies give-away is co-sponsored by Woodside on the Move, LeFrak City Organization, the New York Mets, USTA, White Castle, MetroPlus, EmblemHealth, Time Warner Cable, Queens Center, United Healthcare, Queens Library, Mattone Group, Sherwood Village Tenants Association, OTG, Fidelis Care, Elmhurst Hospital Center, Mega Power, Inc., Yak Pak, Fashion Accessory Bazaar, Madison Square Garden and the North Queens Homeowners Association.
