Este festival (DFFNY) de cine abre la noche del 9 de noviembre (hasta el 14), de manera presencial y en el Internet, con la película cómica No es lo que parece. Es en español y tiene subtítulos en inglés. Está dirigida por David Maler y es la historia de Juanma, un hombre que vive la vida que siempre deseó: organizado, con trabajo y la misma novia de siempre… Hasta que le dijo a su novia que se casaran y entonces se derrumbó su castillo de amor y paz. Three teen ballet students — Raymundo, Angel, and Victor — are the only boys in a class of twenty. In a country where dance is mostly considered an activity for women, they are determined to follow their dreams and challenge traditional gender roles. Like a waltz, music played in triple time, the three boys move through Santo Domingo while confronting, yet sometimes abiding by, the Dominican machismo culture.
Dentro de una clase de ballet con veinte adolescentes, hay sólo tres varones. Siguiendo la amistad entre Raymundo, Ángel y Víctor salen a relucir los prejuicios de un país donde la danza es catalogada como una actividad exclusiva para mujeres. Las interacciones, los movimientos de los bailarines y la música van componiendo esta historia sobre los roles de género tradicionales. Como un vals, un ritmo musical de tres tiempos, los tres bailarines recorren la ciudad de Santo Domingo enfrentándose, y a veces acogiéndose, a la cultura machista que rige la sociedad dominicana.

A pesar de desarrollar una amistad y de aceptar ser filmada en un primer momento, Sory rechaza la presencia de la cámara en su peluquería cuando su hijo emigra ilegalmente a España. Marie retorna a su país de origen y vira la cámara hacia Lisset, la hija de Sory, quien presenta una dualidad entre la posibilidad de irse a vivir con su madre en Barcelona o quedarse con sus hijos en Santo Domingo. Entre banderas y sociedades polarizadas, se muestran los riesgos de realizar un documental que expone a una familia dividida por fronteras más allá de las que impone el agua que rodea la isla.
During the Catalan independence referendum, Marie, a Dominican filmmaker, documents the cultural identity of Sory, a small business owner, single mother, and lesbian. Despite becoming friends and after having agreed to be filmed from the outset, Sory turns away Marie’s camera from the hair salon when her son migrates illegally to Spain. Marie returns to her country and turns the camera toward Lisset, Sory’s daughter. Lisset has to decide whether to move to Barcelona with her mother or to stay in Santo Domingo with her children. Amid flags and polarized societies, Marie exposes a family divided by frontiers more complex than those set up by the water that surrounds the island.

Don Mario makes a pact with a Witch. He asks her to save the life of his son Omar, but the Witch sets a condition: If she saves the son, when he has a daughter and she turns 15, the Witch will take her away. Don Mario accepts. 30 years later in New York, Omar has a daughter named Sarah and in a few days, she will be 15 years old. Omar receives a call, his father is ill, the whole family goes to the Dominican Republic. The family is reunited with their grandfather, Don Mario. Strange beings begin to stalk Sarah and Omar refuses to believe his father’s warnings. The same day that Sarah turns 15 the Witch kidnaps her, Omar and Mercedes have to save their daughter before the Witch completes her ritual.
Don Mario hace una pacto con una bruja, le pide que le salve la vida a su hijo Omar, pero la bruja pone una condición: Si salva al hijo, cuando él tenga una hija y ella cumpla 15 años la Bruja se la va a llevar, Don Mario acepta. 30 años después en Nueva York, Omar tiene una hija llamada Sarah y en pocos días va cumplir 15 años. Omar recibe una llamada, su padre se encuentra enfermo, toda la familia va a República Dominicana.
La familia se reencuentra con su abuelo, Don Mario. Seres extraños comienzan a acechar a Sarah y Omar se niega a creer en las advertencias de su padre. El mismo día que Sarah cumple sus 15 años la bruja la rapta, Omar junto a Mercedes tienen que salvar a su hija antes de que la bruja complete su ritual.

Where to get enough money? If the gear of the industry is a hostile environment for established directors.

HOW DOMINICANS EXPERIENCE HOLLYWOOD?
A CONVERSATION WITH ELVIS NOLASCO
Elvis Nolasco is a New York City-born Dominican-American, Elvis is most known for his roles on the critically-acclaimed, award-winning ABC anthology series AMERICAN CRIME from John Ridley. Elvis was lauded for his performances: in Season 1 taking on the part of “Carter Nix,” a lost soul suffering from mental illness and drug addiction; in Season 2 playing “Chris Dixon,” a passionate high school principal. Elvis made his film debut when cast by Darnell Martin in the critically acclaimed classic I LIKE IT LIKE THAT with Rita Moreno, Lauren Velez, and Jon Seda also Spike Lee’s CLOCKERS with Mekhi Phifer and Delroy Lindo, and began building an impressive resume including his critically acclaimed role in the film IN SEARCH OF A DREAM, still one of the highest-grossing independent Latino films.
Elvis had roles in Spike Lee’s features THE SWEET BLOOD OF JESUS and OLD BOY and was seen in 2018 alongside Mahershala Ali in the Forest Whitaker and Pharrell-produced Netflix feature ROXANNE ROXANNE from director Michael Larnell (2017 Sundance Premiere). Elvis recurred in the Spike Lee series MIRACLE BOYS, shot a series regular role in Spike Lee HBO pilot DA BRICK (executive produced and written by John Ridley), and shot a lead role in the Kathryn Bigelow/Carolyn Strauss produced HBO pilot MOGADISHU, MN. He also memorably recurred in the Netflix/Spike Lee series SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT (based on the film of the same name) where he plays “Papa da Mayor.” Elvis more recently recurred on TNT’s CLAWS, in Tarell McCraney’s OWN series DAVID MAKES MAN, in the Greg Berlanti CW series ALL-AMERICAN, in USA’s QUEEN OF THE SOUTH, and opposite Forest Whitaker in Epix series GODFATHER OF HARLEM. Elvis wrote, directed, produced, and starred in the award-winning short film TIME 2 SURRENDER which was executive produced by Spike Lee.
