The 6th Annual YMCA Welcoming Week! in New York this year is hosting the National Kickoff in Queens! on September 15th and events run throughout the week across the city!
YMCA’s Welcoming Week is a national initiative seeking to bring immigrants, refugees, and native-born residents together to raise awareness of the benefits of welcoming everyone. Welcoming Week events will be hosted throughout the week, in various different branches across New York City, to celebrate the growing movement of inclusive communities that fully embrace New Americans and their contributions to the social fabric of our country. Welcoming Week is a fantastic expression of the Y’s cause to strengthen community by celebrating diversity and fostering social cohesion by building bridges between new Americans and their neighbors.
Last year, YMCAs across the country hosted more than 115 Welcoming Week events, reaching an estimated 25,000 participants!
This year we’re anticipating around 300-400 community members to come celebrate the kickoff at the Queens Museum. Among those community members, the following are expected as well:
- Sharon Greenberger, CEO & President of YMCA of Greater New York
- Mayor DeBlasio (no confirmation yet)
- Commissioner Nisha Argawal (no confirmation yet)
- Lynda Gonzalez-Chavez of Y-USA
- Rachel Peric of Welcoming America
