First, the United States should recognize its role in this immigration crisis. The US has historical responsibility for taking part in military interventions, killings, imposition of dictators, exploitation of natural resources, and monetary loans impossible to pay that seized the development of Latin America. Examples of the above abound: the assassination of Salvador Allende in Chile, the expulsion of Juan Bosch in Dominican Republic, the Iran-Contra Affair in Nicaragua by president Reagan, the manipulation of dictator Manuel Noriega in Panama to fight the false War on Drugs, and other cases.
Second, the US must create a Marshal Plan for Latin America, similar to the one formed in Western Europe in 1948. Especially, to help Mexico and Central America because of their proximity to the US. This region needs highways, public schools, hospitals, and factories to produce and assemble the many products consumers need in this industrialized country.
The problem is that many politicians in the US are shortsighted and egocentric. Politicians fight for personal interests or protect inhumane causes such as assault weapons and pharmaceutical propaganda. The political mentality, including the progressive wing, is not good enough to think “outside of the box” and create more humane, practical, and definitely solutions.
It is also necessary to confront corruption in Latin America to break the cycle of violence, and to build a better society, in peace.
Politicians in this country agree that the immigration system is broken, and should be fixed. If we continue thinking that more money, building a wall on the border, reinforcing the law or housing new family immigrants in tents is the solution, then we are going to repeat the mistakes over and over again.
Immigration reform starts outside of this country and not inside. Investing more money here is not the solution. The problem is the incipient development of Latin American countries. Immigrants from all over this continent, and the world, will continue to come in mass. They will try to enter this country because they are drowning in poverty, violence and corruption. The wave of immigrants is going to increase due to these basic problems, and because of the deterioration of the environment that is drying rivers and destroying agriculture.
When people are hungry and don’t have opportunities to grow, there is no wall or law that will stop the displacement of migrants.
2 pasos para solucionar la crisis migratoria
Primero, Estados Unidos debe reconocer su responsabilidad histórica al haber patrocinado intervenciones militares, matanzas, préstamos impagables y dictadores en Latinoamérica. Algunos ejemplos son la muerte de Salvador Allende en Chile, la expulsión de Juan Busch en República Dominicana, la táctica Irán-Contra en Nicaragua del presidente Reagan, la utilización del dictador Manuel Noriega en panamá para mover drogas ilícitas y muchos otros casos.
Segundo, Estados Unidos debe crear un Plan Marshall para Latinoamérica como lo hizo con Europa Occidental en 1948. En especial, debe ayudar a México y Centroamérica por su proximidad. Una región que necesita carreteras, escuelas, hospitales y fábricas para ensamblar o procesar los productos que requiere el consumidor estadounidense.
El problema es que los políticos en Estados Unidos son miopes y egoístas. Se pelean por intereses personales o defienden causas antihumanas como las armas o el dinero de las farmacéuticas. La mentalidad de los políticos, incluyendo a los más progresistas, no les alcanza para pensar en soluciones más humanas, prácticas y definitivas. También hay que atacar la corrupción en Latinoamérica para romper el círculo de violencia y crear una sociedad más justa, en paz.
Todos los políticos de esta nación están de acuerdo en que hay una crisis migratoria que debe arreglarse. Mientras sigamos pensando que con más dinero, construyendo un muro en la frontera, fortaleciendo las leyes migratorias o levantando campamentos para familias indocumentadas, vamos a solucionar el problema, entonces repetiremos nuestros errores.
La reforma migratoria se halla afuera de este país y no adentro. Inviertir más dinero aquí no es la solución. El problema es el incipiente desarrollo de los países latinoamericanos. Los inmigrantes seguirán tratando de ingresar a esta nación porque se ahogan en pobreza y violencia y corrupción. Las olas de inmigrantes seguirán en aumento por estas razones y por el deterioro del medio ambiente que está dejando pueblos sin agua y cultivos.
Cuando hay hambre y necesidades, no hay muro o leyes que impidan el desplazamiento de inmigrantes.
