MILLINGTON, Tenn. – Petty Officer 1st Class Maria Torresguevara from Queens, New York, serving aboard USS Hue City (CG 66), earned Senior Sailor of the Year for 2015.

The Sailor of the Year Program recognizes superior performance of enlisted personnel emphasizing outstanding achievements, exemplary personal conduct and military bearing, and demonstrated initiative in the performance of duty. This program also motivates personnel to strive for improvement in their assigned duties and leadership. US Navy.

US Navy“I feel very blessed and grateful for earning an opportunity to represent Hue City and the Strike Group 2 Sailors as their Sailor of the Year,” said Torresguevara. “This honor validates the fact that a Sailor from any rating can become a formidable ambassador for the Navy and that there are no such thing as restrictions for any service members to become versatile through hard work and dedication.”

As a ship’s serviceman, Torresguevara is responsible for leading and mentoring 25 Sailors within the Supply Department in all facets of Supply Chain Management.

“The heart of our ship is our Sailors,” said Capt. Wyatt Nathan Childester, commanding officer of USS Hue City. “Without the leadership of Petty Officer Torresguevara, we don’t win the next Battle at Sea, period. She is tough yet compassionate, and is committed to the welfare of every sailor onboard and to the Combat Readiness of a ship-of-the line.”

Located in Mayport, Florida, USS Hue City is a multi-mission guided-missile cruiser that performs primarily in a battle force role.

Torresguevara’s parents, Jesus Torres and Maria Guevara, reside in Queens.

The Navy has given Torresguevara an opportunity of a lifetime.

“Professionally, the Navy has taught me to set specific, attainable goals in order to achieve success,” said Torresguevara. “Over the years, I’ve learned the value of teamwork in a results driven environment and that my success hinges on the success of those around me.”
