This month, the PBS series VOCES presents two new documentaries that explore the politically diverse Latino electorate in the run-up to the 2024 presidential election. Latinos are now the second largest voting age population in the country and it is expected that around 17 and a half million Latinos will be voting; these films provide an up-to-the minute look at the group that many pundits think may cast the deciding votes next month.
Directed and produced by Bernardo Ruiz, VOCES: LATINO VOTE 2024, premiering Tuesday, October 22, 10-11PM, focuses on the key issues that will drive Latino voter turnout in some of the most hotly contested battleground states, including Arizona, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. The film also delves into the efforts both political parties are making to reach the Latino electorate in California and Florida, two states with large Latino populations. Filmed in large cities and small, and on the ground at both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions, the film follows the ever-evolving story of the campaign, including the fallout from the debates and how the sudden candidacy of VP Kamala Harris is changing the political calculation of the race. Premiering on Monday, October 28th, 10-11PM, VOCES: OUR TEXAS, OUR VOTE, from veteran filmmaker Hector Galán, takes viewers inside the largest Latino voter registration mobilization effort in Texas history, led by a new generation on the frontlines of a growing state that neither political party can afford to ignore. The film traces the evolution of Texas as a Latino-majority state, examines the history of efforts to disenfranchise Latino voters, and profiles both conservative and progressive activists who are determined to increase voter participation among Texas Latinos.
