New York Hospital Queens Health Events in May

Throughout the month of May, New York Hospital Queens will host more than 50 classes and events for community members to expand their health knowledge, receive free health screenings, participate in exercise and relaxation classes/sessions, and more. Following are three highlights – please feel free to share these on your calendars, and let us know if you need anything further:

-Our 2014 Healthy Chinese Community Lecture Series, where free monthly lectures (given in Chinese) about health topics of importance to the Chinese community, continues with a discussion on heart and vascular health and pacemaker technology.

George Juang, M.D., director, Electrophysiology and medical director, Cardiac Arrhythmia Center, and Vincent Wang, D.O., attending physician, Medicine, will provide the presentations. It will be held on Saturday, May 10, 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., in the Lang Auditorium at New York Hospital Queens (56-45 Main Street, Flushing, N.Y.). Registration is not required.

–The Navigating the Medical System Lecture Series for 2013-2014 continues. The next lecture will be held on Tuesday, May 13, at 7:30 p.m., at Congregation Etz Chaim (147-19 73rd Avenue in Kew Garden Hills). Edward Chai, M.D., director, Division of Neurology and Stroke Services, and David Inslicht, M.D.,, attending physician, Medicine, will discuss relieving back pain. The series was developed by Mel Breite, M.D., internist, NYHQ.

–May is Stroke Awareness Month. As a designated stroke center, New York Hospital Queens is highly experienced in treating stroke patients. Free stroke risk assessments will be offered on Tuesday, May 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Lang Auditorium at New York Hospital Queens (56-45 Main Street, Flushing, N.Y.). Participants will have their blood pressure taken, review their risk assessment with a nurse or physician assistant, and receive a complimentary heart healthy meal. Volunteer interpreters (for Chinese and Spanish) will be present.

At 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., Edward Chai, M.D., director, Division of Neurology and Stroke Services, will lecture about “Stroke in 2014,” and Paul Magda, M.D., stroke neurologist, will lecture about “Statins to Prevent Stroke Occurrence.”
