EN INGLES:
One of NYIC’s member organizations, Artists, Athletes, and Activists, led by Power Malu, provides crucial support for newly arrived asylum seekers by facilitating access to legal and health services and creating a welcoming community space. Power has also developed a free soccer program, A3FC, for asylum-seeking children, offering them a vital outlet to connect and engage with peers. After a successful year, the program has temporarily paused due to its reliance on volunteer and donation support.
Recently, a local soccer group, the Astoria Futsal Club reached out to Power to explore ways to support these young athletes. As a result of their discussions, they are organizing a soccer tournament on Saturday, October 26th, at Triborough Bridge Playground B in Astoria, Queens from 9am-4:30pm. The tournament aims to fundraise for the youth soccer program run by Artists, Athletes, and Activists, ensuring that these children can continue to benefit from this important community resource.
This tournament not only emphasizes the power of community support but also showcases the important role that sports play in the lives of asylum-seeking children, providing them with a sense of belonging and normalcy.
