«Flicks & Jazz in the Garden» Celebrates 7th Year at Sunnyside Gardens Park Event on September 16, 2017 (rain date: September 17) to feature live jazz, vintage cartoons, a silent film legend, & arts/crafts for kids Sunnyside, NY (Aug. 15, 2017) — On Saturday September 16, 2017, Western Queen’s Sunnyside Gardens Park will open its doors at 5pm for Flicks & Jazz in the Garden, an annual family-friendly arts festival welcoming jazz music, vintage cartoons, silent film lovers of all ages.

This popular annual fall arts festival is now in its seventh year (and the third year in a row with a live jazz music component). The event will once again feature vintage cartoons (Betty Boop, Popeye, Looney Tunes and fairy-tale-themed cartoons) from the collection of renowned Queens-based early animation collector, curator, and historian, Tommy Jose Stathes.

This year (for the first time in the event’s history), a kid-friendly short from silent-film legend Charlie Chaplin will be shown. During the musical line-up, younger audience members can tap into their creativity to make cartoon-inspired art and other crafty hands-on projects.

Artist & Craftsman, an art supply store located on 34-09 Queens Blvd. in Sunnyside, Queens, will lead one of the activities. A tasty selection of food, including pizza, popcorn, finger foods, and other cinema-style treats and sweets, as well as beverages including beer, wine, and soft drinks, will be available for purchase. Stumptown cold brew will be sold by Sunnyside’s Brookside Market. Pizza will be provided courtesy of Jimmy’s Pizzeria, a popular pizzeria located on 41-10 49th St, Sunnyside, NY 11104.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket or low chair(s), and to get ready for a magical evening of film and jazz under the stars. Admission is a suggested donation of $10 for non-park members and $5 for park members. All kids enter free of charge. Proceeds will go towards covering the costs of the event other public programming.

Additional event co-sponsors include local businesses: Butcher Block and The Globe Tavern. Sunnyside Gardens Park, founded in 1926 and one of New York City’s two privately run parks, opens to the public each year for this arts event.
