On Saturday, 60 City Council candidates who have taken the ‘Courage to Change’ pledge joined Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at an event outside City Hall. All City Council candidates who took the CTC Pledge received a perfect score on a questionnaire which assessed their policy stances on a range of progressive issues. The full list of candidates taking the pledge can be found here – along with ranked choice voting order in select districts.
“When voters see that a candidate has taken the Courage to Change Pledge, they know that the candidate has committed to supporting policies that prioritize working-class New Yorkers in the pursuit of social, economic and racial justice,” said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a statement. “These candidates have pledged to change a political system that puts wealthy special interests ahead of working people. They have committed to standing up to established interests, big money, and politics as usual no matter the Party.”
These are AOC’s selection for New York City Council candidates in Queens:
Following the event, the Congresswoman held a media availability where she announced her top choice for Mayor: Maya Wiley. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez noted that she may announce further rankings for the mayoral race in the coming days. The Congresswoman had previously announced her support for Brad Lander for Comptroller and Jumaane Williams for Public Advocate.
“The time has come to join together as a movement. We have an option of a candidate who can center people, racial justice, economic justice, and climate justice. A candidate that didn’t just come up to run for mayor, but has experience. That candidate is Maya Wiley and I will be ranking her as my number one choice. Maya Wiley grew up in this movement. She took that formative life experience and she became a civil rights lawyer, advancing the rights and justice for Black and Brown Americans,” said Rep. Ocasio-Cortez. “The stakes are too high to sit this race out. If we don’t come together as a movement, we will have a city run for billionaires and special interests. We have to make a choice. And Maya Wiley is our #1. She will be a progressive in Gracie Mansion.”
“Having the support of Rep. Ocasio-Cortez means the world to me,” said Maya Wiley. “AOC is a fearless champion for our city in Congress. She has fought for working people, taken-on corporate greed, revolutionized the discussion on the urgent need to address climate change, and is an advocate for a more equitable economy. Nobody says and means change like her. And with AOC’s help, we are going to win this race and bring the change we need to the city we love. I am honored to have her support behind our movement and am looking forward to working hand-in-hand to deliver a reimagined New York City that works for and protects ALL New Yorkers.”
