El director de cine mexicano Alfonso Cuarón se convirtió en el primer latino en ganar dos Oscars el mismo año: El mejor director y el mejor logro de edición por la película Gravedad (Gravity), en donde actuó Sandra Bullock haciendo el papel de astronauta fuera de control.
12 Years a Slave ganó el premio a la mejor película y la primera vez que Hollywood le otorga este premio a un director negro, Steve McQueen. Desde su creación en 1929, nunca un director negro había tenido este honor. Es la historia de un negro del norte del estado de Nueva York que fue secuestrado y vendido como esclavo por 12 años y luego escribió un libro. La película se basó en ese libro.
Lupita Nyong’o, quien ha conquistado al público por su negro rostro original y juvenil, también ganó el Oscar por mejor actriz de apoyo en la película ¡2 Years a Slave.
El Oscar a la mejor actriz fue para Cate Blanchett por su papel en Blue Jasmine. El premio al mejor actor fue para Matthew McConaughey por su papel en Dallas Buyers Club.
La presentadora de televisión Ellen DeGeneres fue la maestra de ceremonias y quien es lesbiana. Se burló de los actores y repartió pizza a los mejores actores de cine que estaban sentados en las primeras filas.
Los esposos Kristen Anderson-Lopez y Robert Lopez ganaron el Oscar como la mejor música original en las películas Let It Go y Frozen.
El actor Leonardo de Caprio, quien hizo un excelente trabajo en la película The Wolf of Wall Street, no ganó nada.
