Este domingo 4 de mayo en el Kupferberg Center for the Arts del Queens College se celebra el Cinco de Mayo con un evento llamado Viva México. Es un espectáculo de las tradiciones de México, su música y su cultura que ensambla el grupo Tlen Huicani de Veracruz, Mariachi Real de México y el Ballet Folklórico Mexicano de Nueva Yrok. Los invitados especiales son josé Adán Pérez y Alexander Ponce.

Celebrating its 51st anniversary, Tlen Huicani from Xalapa, Veracruz, is one of Mexico’s top traditional folk music groups. Founded in 1973, they are known for making the harpa jarocha (folk harp) the centerpiece of their music. Directed by the renowned Alberto de la Rosa, the group was named Best Folk Group in Mexico by the Union of Music and Theater Critics.
Mariachi Real De Mexico
Founded in 1991 by Ramon Ponce and his son Ramon Ponce Jr., Mariachi Real De Mexico is celebrating 34 years as one of the most sought-after mariachi ensembles in New York City and the Northeast. A GRAMMY-winning group, they are widely recognized as cultural ambassadors of mariachi music.
Ballet Folklorico Mexicano de Nueva York
For over 42 years, Ballet Folklorico Mexicano de Nueva York has shared its passion for Mexican folkloric dance. This nonprofit organization preserves and showcases regional dances that reflect Mexico’s cultural heritage, captivating audiences at prestigious venues across the Northeast.
Special guest: José Adán Pérez, a native of Mazatlán, Mexico, is an expressive and commanding baritone known for his rich, powerful voice. He is an alumnus of the Domingo-Thornton Young Artist Program at LA Opera, the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, and the Aspen Opera Theater.Ballet Folklorico Mexicano de Nueva York
Special guest: Alexander Ponce, a fifth-generation mariachi, is the newest member of Mariachi Real De Mexico. The son of director Ramon Ponce Jr., he debuted in 2024 at Kupferberg Center’s Cinco de Mayo celebration. Alexander has since performed in Times Square and 54 Below, carrying on his family’s century-long mariachi legacy.

In a rich career spanning sixty years, Chucho has pushed boundaries in pursuit of new expressions in Afro-Cuban music. Chucho Valdés: Irakere 50 is a celebration of Irakere, the Cuban band that, with its bold fusion of Afro-Cuban ritual music, popular Cuban music styles, jazz and rock, marked a before and after in Latin jazz.
