Thousands to participate in Zumbathon® Charity Events Nationwide to raise funds for

Go Red Por Tu Corazón Movement

Feb. 1, 2011 – HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Zumba Fitness has announced its latest charitable endeavor: the Party Hearty program, a multi-faceted relationship with Go Red Por Tu Corazón, the American Heart Association’s bilingual heart-health movement for Latinas. The campaign runs now through May 2011 with a commitment of raising at least $100,000 for the organization.

“Zumba fitness is now a global phenomenon in more than 110 countries and when we found out how much U.S. Hispanic women were at risk for heart disease, we knew we needed to do something,” said Alberto Perlman, CEO of Zumba Fitness. “Together with our dedicated instructors and fans, we’re excited to embark on another national cause-related campaign that will draw attention to the parallel between a healthy lifestyle and heart health.”

Coming off the success of its inaugural Party in Pink™ program that raised half a million dollars for Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, Zumba Fitness kicks off the Party Hearty™ campaign before American Heart Month in February enlisting its thousands of U.S. instructors to host Zumbathon® charity events – high-energy Zumba® classes that raise funds for non-profit organizations. With 400 Party Hearty Zumbathon events currently listed and more being added daily, it is required that at least 75 percent of ticket sales are donated to the organization, although many choose to donate 100 percent. Limited edition Party Hearty Zumbawear™ apparel may also be purchased, including a racer back tank top and cargo pants, with 30 percent of the sales price from each being donated to the American Heart Association’s Go Red Por Tu Corazón movement.

According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in the U.S., with Hispanic women at greater risk, unless they adopt healthy eating choices and a frequent physical activity regimen.

“Hispanic women face the highest risk of death from heart disease, but they have lower risk factor awareness,” said Dr. Ileana Piña, MD, FACC, Professor of Cardiology and Internal Medicine. “While we can’t change certain risk factors, such as ethnicity and family history, women can help reduce their risks and prevent heart disease by making heart-healthy changes, and incorporating nutrition and physical activity into their lifestyle.”

A quick note about the Zumba® trademark

The word ZUMBA® was coined by our company and is the brand name for our fun and effective fitness program that combines easy-to-follow moves with invigorating Latin and international rhythms. When referring to ZUMBA® we ask that you please keep in mind the following to protect the thousands of instructors worldwide who make their careers teaching Zumba Fitness classes:

Please do not:

  • Use Zumba as a verb — for example, “once you zumba, you’ll be hooked.”
  • Use Zumba as a noun — for example, “zumba is my favorite exercise.”
  • Use Zumba as a generic term — for example, as a name for a fitness program “My gym offers zumba.”

Instead, please do:

  • Capitalize the letter “Z” or the whole word «ZUMBA»
  • Refer to “the Zumba Fitness program,” “Zumba class,” “Zumba instructor” etc. – for example “The Zumba Fitness program is the most fun you’ll ever have while working out” or “I love my Zumba instructor, she’s the best.”

Use the ® symbol on the right hand shoulder of the word Zumba® – especially in headers and titles.
