EmblemHealth is hosting symposium with Comunilife on Thursday, May 7. It is entitled, “Life is Precious: A Community Informed Program,” and it will address a seriously overlooked mental health disparity in the Latina community: the high risk of suicide and suicide behaviors among Latina adolescents.
According to a survey conducted by the CDC, 19% of Latina teens in New York City seriously considered suicide in 2013, with the national rate even higher at a shocking 26%. A high percentage of these teens actually attempted suicide, many with tragic results. Latina teens are at significantly higher risk than their non-Latino peers.
An esteemed panel of mental health professionals and government officials will be addressing the health trends and risk factors of this disparity, as well as the importance of individual interventions and evidence-based prevention programs. This symposium will attract national attention, and I wanted you to be among the first to know about it.
