The Noguchi Museum’s next exhibition, “Against Time: The Noguchi Museum 40th Anniversary Reinstallation”, curated by Matthew Kirsch, which celebrates the museum’s rich history and the profound legacy of its founder, Isamu Noguchi.
In honor of the museum’s 40th anniversary, “Against Time” reimagines the museum’s original second-floor installation, bringing together over 60 of Noguchi’s most significant works. From his early brass and wood sculptures influenced by his time in Constantin Brancusi’s studio to his later masterpieces in granite, basalt, and marble, the exhibition offers a unique journey through Noguchi’s artistic evolution.
Opening on August 28, 2024, and running through September 14, 2025, “Against Time” draws from the museum’s permanent collection and historical archives. This installation will include Noguchi’s iconic designs for theater sets, environmental spaces and a remarkable selection of project models. These elements not only showcase Noguchi’s versatility but also highlight his innovative approach to integrating art with natural and built environments.
Noguchi’s vision for the museum was to create a living, breathing space that evolved with time, reflecting his belief in art’s social role and its capacity to transform spaces and communities. This exhibition underscores the themes that permeated his work—transformation, mortality, and humanity’s coexistence with nature—while inviting visitors to engage with his ideas anew.
