La 12ª edición del Festival de Cine de las Américas de Nueva York (TAFFNY) www.TAFFNY.com presenta una programación vibrante con nueve largometrajes y más de 25 cortometrajes, celebrando la riqueza y diversidad de las historias, lenguas y culturas del continente americano.
El festival inaugura oficialmente el jueves 12 de junio a las 6:00 p.m. en el Instituto Cervantes de Nueva York (211 E 49th Street, NYC) con el estreno neoyorquino de Becoming Vera, dirigida por Sergio Vizuete. Esta cinta, que debutó recientemente en el Festival de Miami con excelentes críticas, narra la inspiradora historia de Vera, una pianista de 18 años con un talento excepcional que acaba de salir del sistema de acogida. Sola y enfrentando un futuro incierto, Vera encuentra consuelo y propósito en el mundo del Latin Jazz, un género tan complejo y vibrante como ella misma.
TAFFNY es un festival gratuito y abierto al público. Todas las películas en idioma extranjero cuentan con subtítulos en inglés.
El festival culmina el viernes 20 de junio a las 6:00 p.m. en el Museo Nacional del Indio Americano (1 Bowling Green, NYC) con la ceremonia de premiación de los cortometrajes en competencia, seguida por el estreno en Nueva York de So Surreal: Behind the Mask, codirigido por Neil Diamond (Cree) y Joanne Robertson. Parte aventura, parte viaje espiritual, el documental sigue al cineasta Cree Neil Diamond en un recorrido que lo lleva de costa a costa y a través del Atlántico en una exploración profunda de la influencia global, la reconexión cultural y la restitución. Los directores estarán presentes para una sesión de preguntas y respuestas moderada por Maria Galban, directora de colecciones del Museo Nacional del Indio Americano del Smithsonian.
El Dr. Juan Carlos Mercado, Decano de la División de Estudios Interdisciplinarios en el Centro para la Educación de los Trabajadores (CWE) del City College de Nueva York y cofundador de TAFFNY, afirma sobre esta edición del festival: “Al celebrar nuestra duodécima edición, reafirmamos con orgullo nuestro papel como un faro cultural dentro del diverso y vibrante tejido artístico de la ciudad. La selección de este año busca dar voz a historias frecuentemente ignoradas por los medios convencionales y destacar países que rara vez tienen presencia en los grandes festivales, en plena consonancia con la misión de CUNY y el City College.”
The Americas Short Films Competition está dedicada a promover y exhibir obras audiovisuales de hasta 26 minutos realizadas por cineastas emergentes que reflejan las inquietudes, perspectivas y realidades de quienes viven en la región. Este año, TAFFNY presenta más de 25 cortometrajes que compiten por el Premio de las Américas en las categorías de Animación, Documental, Experimental y Ficción.
El jurado de las categorías de Documental y Animación está compuesto por el director Miguel Rueda, el profesor de estudios de género Joe Rollins y la profesora de LaGuardia Community College Ana María Hernández. Para las categorías de Ficción y Experimental, el jurado está integrado por la actriz Annelise Hagen, el compositor de cine y músico Sami Bucella, y el videógrafo y productor Juan Carlos Velásquez.
Durante nueve días, 17 países compartirán parte de su identidad, cultura y diversidad a través del lenguaje universal del cine. El Panorama de las Américas es un programa vibrante que celebra la riqueza de las culturas latinoamericanas mediante la presentación de nueve largometrajes de ficción y documental, galardonados internacionalmente y provenientes de países como Argentina, Brasil, Colombia, Canadá, España, Estados Unidos, Guatemala, Costa Rica, México, Panamá, Paraguay y Uruguay.
“Cada año, los cineastas y sus historias nos ofrecen un espejo de las luchas, los sueños y las esperanzas de sus sociedades. En esta edición, quisimos destacar narrativas que celebran la resiliencia de las mujeres, exploran la complejidad del amor y abordan temas fundamentales como la salud mental y la inclusión, especialmente en las comunidades LGBTQ+ y entre los adolescentes. Las Américas son un mosaico vibrante de culturas—complejas, iluminadoras y profundamente humanas—y la misión de TAFFNY es llevar estas historias a la pantalla para que los neoyorquinos puedan experimentarlas, reflexionar y conectarse. Y lo mejor: todo es gratuito y está lleno de alegría”, señala Diana Vargas, directora artística de TAFFNY.
TAFFNY (The Americas Film Festival New York) nació con el propósito de crear un espacio de apreciación cinematográfica que celebre el multiculturalismo, la diversidad y las nuevas dinámicas sociales a lo largo de las Américas. El festival también busca fomentar y visibilizar el talento de nuevos directores de cine emergentes.
Esta iniciativa es liderada por la División de Estudios Interdisciplinarios del Centro para la Educación de los Trabajadores (CWE) del City College de Nueva York (CCNY – CUNY), con el generoso respaldo del presidente de CCNY, Vincent Boudreau, y de la vicepresidenta Dee Dee Mozeleski; CUNY-CCNY Quest, A Lifelong Learning Community; y la colaboración de destacadas instituciones como el Instituto Cervantes, el Museo Nacional del Indio Americano, el Bildner Center del Centro de Graduados de CUNY y el Consulado General de Colombia en Nueva York.
