Students at LIC Hosted Community School Breakfast Showcasing Their Achievement

In partnership with the New York City Department of Education Office of Community Schools — Long Island City High School (LICHS), and Zone 126 (a sponsored project of the
Fund for the City of New York) hosted a Community School Breakfast to celebrate the 2015-2016 school
year student achievements. The Breakfast is an annual event that builds the home, school, and community
collaboration to support Long Island City High School student leaders.
Zone 126 was selected in July 2015 as the lead Community based Organization to spearhead the Renewal
Community School efforts at LICHS. During school year 2015-2016, great strides were made to coordinate
partner organizations including Camp Herrlich, Global Kids, Socrates Sculpture Park, enACT, Rock the
Street, Wall Street, Little Flower Yoga, Let’s Get Ready, and Year Up New York. The partnerships also led
to the addition of a school-based mental health clinic through the Child Center of New York to support
student needs. The Zone 126 Community School Team at LICHS also furthers parent and family
engagement through attendance efforts, home visits, and mentoring. Among attendees to the breakfast were Long Island City High School faculty and families, communitybased

organizations, local businesses, and elected officials Assemblymember Cathy Nolan, State Senator
Michael Gianaris, Assemblymember Aravella Simotas, and Councilmember Costa Constantinides.
The Breakfast began with a Parent Input session, where LICHS staff and Zone 126 helped facilitate a
session to develop and cultivate parent and caregiver’s voices and learn about vital topics such as parent
engagement and attendance. During the opening remarks, Principal Vivian Selenikas emphasized that
“our work together as a Community School Team emphasizes collaboration, focus, and community
building to provide student and families with the academic aesthetic and wellness support needed for
all Global Citizens.”
LICHS students from the Small Learning Communities (SLC) performed spoken word and musical pieces
as part of a partnership with Broadway musical Hamilton (#EduHam), where they recreated scenes from
the musical, culminating with a field trip to see the show and cast Q&A! In addition, student speakers
from each small learning community (Global Languages, Culinary Arts, Humanities and Urban Culture,
and the Academy of Wellness Education) gave remarks about their experiences at LICHS. Attendees were
able to engage with one another in addition to learning about vital topics such as student mental health,
school environment, community partnerships, and academic curriculum enrichment.
“Long Island City High School has always been a zoned school, but in the past few years, even before
becoming a ‘Community School,’ our students, staff and parents have learned how to experience all that
the school, the neighborhood businesses and organizations have to offer, “said Anita O’Brien, Long Island
City High School Parent Association President. “Our school has also given back to the LIC/Astoria
Community by becoming partners with organizations that showcase our students’ talents and
abilities. Collaboration is the key for giving/getting support to help a neighborhood and their school
shine.”

said Anju J. Rupchandani, Zone 126 Interim Executive Director and VP of Collective Impact Partnerships.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled about the expansion of our partner programs that are ensure that we are
preparing our students to become college and career ready, as well as productive citizens of the Western
Queens community. We are working side by side with Long Island City High School to holistically prepare
all students to thrive inside and outside of the classroom.”
